This year we have created a community, literally! All of the students in room 1 and 2 have each decorated and built a house for our town. Houses were stored until such time as the town was built.
The purpose of this is to give Grade 6 students an active model town for their municipal government and provincial government units in Social Studies.
After being introduced to the four “Pillars of Democracy”, students worked in groups to come up with designs for their town. They were given parameters, and a budget, which they had to consider before designing their ideal community. Students realized that there was limited space and voted to sacrifice part of their budget to obtain a second, smaller piece of land. Then, they re-did their designs.

Students were asked to present different ways of how electricity is applied in the real world. They were required to consider new and previous knowledge in order to create a device that would demonstrate their understanding. The solid platform students built at the beginning of the unit allowed them to grow and realize the meaning of electricity in their own daily lives.
As our year went on, students were then given an opportunity to offer proposals about what they wanted in the community. Proposals were presented at a Council Meeting. After debate and discussion, it was decided that we would add a bank and grocery store.
