An old proverb says “ A healthy mind in a healthy body”. Our Kindergarten students learned that, in order to be healthy, we need to eat food from all the food groups. The little “chefs “also discovered that you might like something you have never tried before, when they were making their own pita with fruits, veggies and meat.
Fish Creek "Spring Fever"
Our little investigators went in April on a nature walk to Fish Creek. Here are some signs of spring they noticed using their five senses: birds singing, new leaves on the tree branches, snow/ ice melting, grass growing and insects.
Fruit and Veggie Day
Throughout the year we emphasized healthy eating habits. In the month of November we had a Fruit and Veggie Day in which the children prepared a fruit salad as well as a veggie tray. The classes then got to ‘eat their work’. Yum yum!
Safety City
Our first field trip of the year to Safety City has helped the children explore the larger community and learn about safety on the road. By playing the roles of pedestrians and drivers in the mini town, the children become aware of the importance of reading and respecting the safety signs.
My Pet and Me
The Humane Society came to our classes and gave the children a presentation about safety around dogs. The children learned how to protect themselves around strange dogs, to ask permission to approach a dog and how to pet the dog safely.
They also talked about animal feelings. The children learned that animals, like humans, have feelings and they can show it not only with their face, but also with their ears, tails and their behavior.
Active Living
Our active learners had the opportunity to learn some basic soccer skills from an expert. The children had a lot of fun practicing dribbling, passing and shooting through drills and fun games such as “ Green light/ Red light” and “What time is Mr. Wolf?”
Trying new things helps us learn and develop our confidence. During the month of March our students took skating lessons from professionals at the YMCA arena. It was amazing to see how much the children had progressed in just three lessons.
Quest Theatre
Quest Theatre was our Artist in Residence this year. Each kindergarten class met with an actor from the company to create an original 3-5 minute play highlighting a virtue: love, honesty, kindness and caring.
